When I see RED Everything is black and white, at this point. It's all shapes and values. Then I load a brush straight from the tube, and smear it on the lips. I am blown across the room. My pulse quickens as I turn up the music. It has suddenly become serious. Maggie Nelson in her book Bluets, said she had fallen in love with a color. In her case, it was blue. For me, it's Cadmium Red Medium. It's such a powerful color. Then, add some titanium white and you have this luscious fleshy pink. Just a hint on the canvas and everything changes. It’s a carnal color. A color of desire. A color of passion. It's the color of blood. As I look around the studio, every recent canvas has a generous dose of this magical color. How long will this obsession, this love affair, last? I suppose until it no longer excites me. Enflames me. Shows up in my dreams. There is really no way to know. After all, wasn’t it just last year I couldn’t live without Venetian Red and the year before, I believe it was Bone Black…
